But it was not until the mid-2000s that social media sites such as MySpace, YouTube, Facebook, Digg and a dozen others were the trend. These social media sites are not just source of get-togetherness and hangout pit stops but they are also one’s virtual connection to just about anything under the sun. Think of the tremendous application social media offer.

Source of News – In the past, we only regard sites such as CNN.com and usatoday.com as our source of online news. With social media sites such as twitter, we can now get our news all in one page. Just subscribe online news sites and link it to your twitter page and voila! You can have updates every time you click on your twitter page from all of these news sites that you had bookmarked.

Doing Business Online – Before 2005, business models were highly traditional. Then came Amazon.com, whose business pattern is imitated by hundreds of online business sites. Then came social media as a platform for businessmen. Simple yet cost-effective. If you don’t have that much capital, all you need to do is link your business site to other websites. You may employ various online methods too to promote your business site. What’s even better is that if you don’t want to buy your own domain, then you may use your blogger or Multiply account as a platform of your business on the Web.

Meeting Friends - It’s really a pleasure to meet new friends online, learn and chat with them. But the best and safer way to gain lots of friends online is through social media groups in which you can have access to their real profile. This is practically a group for everyone like for example Facebook; there is a group category for Catholics, Hippies, Russians, Naturist and even UFO existence theorist.

Others, like me who desire to discover the internal works of this seems that arbitrary.

To recall the early days, the only way to find out how Digg works was to monitor. Fortunately, nowadays, Digg analysts have a huge number of tools; here are some tools that everybody wants to discover the nuts and bolts of Digg.

SocialBlade – this new tool works great on huge resolutions. It digs up the stories that strike Digg’s front stories and shows the number of digs as well as remarks for each story – including the person’s name of the submitter, profile and submission numbers.

Digg Explorer – is an interactive visualization in which circles are fluidly positioned in various ways to emphasize patterns of interest. For instance, you can see the numerals of most frequently used proper nouns on Digg and the stories that contain them.

Digg Trends – this is an interactive instrument that demonstrates trends in words usage over time and word associations for stories that reached popular status on Digg. This tool has also been created by Jeff Clark, the guy who brought us Digg Explorer.

Digg Comment Viewer – a web based application focuses on following you or your friends’ comments on Digg, it actually reveals some data. Each user you type in it makes a free view of all the user’s friends, their friends. Moreover, you can see how many up and down votes each comment had received, as well as the net result. Lastly, it provides some general comment-related statistics.

DigChart - possibly the most looking application in the group, DigCharts takes 10 well-liked Digg stories and compares their popularity in pie chart format. It also gives a chart that demonstrates the history of a Digg; it’s appealing to see how some stories rapidly become popular and fast fade away, while others retain their popularity over a longer period.

Digg promised earlier that they are going to use their new technology to get rid of abusive digg users and revealed this has long been the problem of many diggers complaining of their stories being duped by other unscrupulous users.

I don’t know yet the parameters that dig defines about a duplicate content since in breaking news articles which I have presented above, it is most likely to happen that there would many writers who can have the same story but of different wordings in the article submitted to digg – and whether the digg technology could still track the original source of the story being submitted.

I hope they can also safeguard the original writer of the article instead of falsely favoring other users and worst if they erroneously banned the original writer that failed to submit first their stories to digg.com. Yes, this happens sometimes that the dupers will have to submit first an article to digg instead of the original writer of the content being written.

Digg is usually used by Internet addicts who write blogs as a hobby but oftentimes, Digg is used by Internet entrepreneurs who optimize their websites.

Because these entrepreneurs post their blogs in bulk and spam them everywhere on Digg, they cannot easily track the results of the web hits they’ve accumulated via Digg. So here are some online applications which can help you track the posts you’ve shared and linked through Digg:

Digg Monitor – this is compatible for Mac systems only. It has a meter which tracks down everything you’ve posted on Digg. You need to download this application.

Social Site Submission Watch Dog – enumerates the ranking of all the content you’ve posted on Digg. This is a particularly simple yet efficient Web-based tool since you are outrightly told the number of diggs in the content that you’ve posted.

Google Digg Monitor – this application can be used via iGoogle. It has pretty sleek and cool features such as Measuring the Digg Effect.

Social Traffic Monitor – this particular tool looks very much like the meter embedded on your website which shows how the number of hits your content page has been viewed.

Diggwatcher – this tool is recommended for people who have vision impairment because of the very large font on the number of views your content has been digged.

Digg Alerter – once downloaded, this particular application resides in your system tray and will pop up everytime your story is digged or at the time interval of your preference.

DiggWatch – another Web-based application.

I am very much aware of digg that it is one of the most famous social networks being used all over the world. I wanted to get updated with my digg everyday as possible, but I guess I have difficulties to do it. Just recently, when I opened my digg and my facebook I was amazed with the new features they were introducing. They collaborated in connection to make you always updated to your digg and at the same time to your facebook.

You can now post your digg to your facebook if you want your article from your digg always get updated. The good thing about it since your friends can read what you have shared in facebook. Another thing about facebook and digg connection since you will have the chance to get more friends both from digg and facebook. Your friends in facebook will know what your activities in your digg since it will appear to your facebook’s profile.

How to connect your digg to your facebook? Easy, before you log in to your digg the facebook image will appear right exactly at your digg, all you have to do is click the connect word there and you will already connected. You will know if you were already connected to facebook since your profile picture in your digg has the facebook logo.

The well known social media network which is the Digg have already launched brand new feature name as DiggBar. With this feature, it allows the Digg users to create their own shortened URLs directly through the Digg with a third party microblogging services such as Twhirl. This DiggBar feature is quite neat or tidy because it accomplish the most traditional software toolbars that there able to do. Since, it allows to see and be able to interact the user comments, viewing related stories and allows to see other stories that been dugg from similar resources. Aside of that, the user experiences allow to the other user and still are able to hop back towards the Digg. This is quite good for several publishers due to the fact that users due to the fact that it keeps their users in their site while doing these activities that previously takes place back in Digg.

With this Diggbar, it allows every user to know on how much traffic Digg is driving through showing them of how many views this story had been gotten that in most cases surpasses several dig stories. Last year, Digg have announced as the Facebook Connect launch partner and until now Digg is not part of this Facebook site. Jay Adelson had already gone into the record with Wired and toward his Facebook page for an updated version of Digg’s site search.

Information flood over the web and it is up to the researcher to sift truly valuable information. There are so many book marking social networks that we can use to gauge our research. Digg is a very powerful network; delicious, reddit, technorati and stumbleupon are a few of those any researcher would love to know and surf.

But do you know which webpage, site or information is reliable in the web? Here are some criteria to base in evaluating certain webpage or website information.

Content- In evaluating the website’s content, you try to assess the intent of the content; the kind of writing used like was it scholarly, poetic or satiric; is the author identified? Does the author have a reliable reputation? Does it have a current edition? These are just a few of the many questions that you should ask yourself before believing anything you read in the web. The next thing you should assess is the websites copyright, continuity and context.

Somebody is responsible for the making of the document, image, graphic, sound and all these matters fall under copyright rule. Internet users should respect copyright. Citation is also another way to credit the maker and author of the article used as reference in the making of the information and also to provide further research for the researcher. Another thing, will the website be able to provide credible information no and on the following days? That is what we call continuity.

The Web 2.0 is an avenue for information, linking and networking and me and you as users should be smart enough in evaluating true from false information found in the web. Digg’s popular pages are having a very transcendental effect on the internet web but still as user we should know how to evaluate the materials that we encountered and find in the web.

When I was first introduced to friendster, my very first network, I got engaged in the flurry of activities from uploading photos to joining groups.

WARNING: Please do read what kind of groups you joined in any network. On the very first month I joined all those groups available. To my dismay there are groups that I do not like and with PG content.

And my next network is the yahoo answer. I answered all those questions as HONESTLY as I could and found them to be “too personal and revealing” after rereading it a month after.

I also joined Digg and dugg what I could without considerations for the topic I dugg. I joined ping.fm and connect it with facebook, plurk and utterli.

So, after a month I decided to search my username. To my surprise and dismay: All my activities with out exception were searched and listed on line. One person could make a cognitive map of who am I? Where I live? Who are my friends? What I like? Plus a detailed description of ME. So, what does this implies?

It implies that a person who has an interest in you can tract you down easily. That as citizen we should be concern of our safety. That this information can be easily used at our disadvantage; a warning bell rung in my head as I saw a long list of my daily activities in all of my social networks.

The kind of answer, the kind of group we have, our thoughts and our emotions will be known to all.

The internet is a recorder of our daily activities that can be known to the whole wide world.

The article, “With Great social Media Power Comes Great Responsibility”, is very true.

So, be a social network butterfly but proceed with caution and great responsibility.

I am still having lots of fun with all my social networks but this time with great responsibility. Zero Risk Socializing should be your number rule.
