Zero Risk Socializing with Social Networks
This article is for those who just recently found the obsession for joining the hundreds of social networks in the World Wide Web. When I was first introduced to friendster, my very first network, I got engaged in the flurry of activities from uploading photos to joining groups.
WARNING: Please do read what kind of groups you joined in any network. On the very first month I joined all those groups available. To my dismay there are groups that I do not like and with PG content.
And my next network is the yahoo answer. I answered all those questions as HONESTLY as I could and found them to be “too personal and revealing” after rereading it a month after.
I also joined Digg and dugg what I could without considerations for the topic I dugg. I joined ping.fm and connect it with facebook, plurk and utterli.
So, after a month I decided to search my username. To my surprise and dismay: All my activities with out exception were searched and listed on line. One person could make a cognitive map of who am I? Where I live? Who are my friends? What I like? Plus a detailed description of ME. So, what does this implies?
It implies that a person who has an interest in you can tract you down easily. That as citizen we should be concern of our safety. That this information can be easily used at our disadvantage; a warning bell rung in my head as I saw a long list of my daily activities in all of my social networks.
The kind of answer, the kind of group we have, our thoughts and our emotions will be known to all.
The internet is a recorder of our daily activities that can be known to the whole wide world.
The article, “With Great social Media Power Comes Great Responsibility”, is very true.
So, be a social network butterfly but proceed with caution and great responsibility.
I am still having lots of fun with all my social networks but this time with great responsibility. Zero Risk Socializing should be your number rule.
