Social Media in the Newsroom
Social Media is now used as a means to market products and to reach people in the business world. Though the newspaper industry is far too slow to adapt to this sudden change of getting, delivering and making news; still they are catching up quickly.
With Ashton-CNN race plus with Oprah’s entry to the twittering world, the newsroom is now also getting active on the use of social media like facebook and twitter to name two.
The medium used in gathering breaking news are indeed changed by the birth of social media. In the past the ‘news’ get too slow to come to the television screen and the newspaper stand; but not now when we have all these social networks to fish information from. News coming from the farthest part of the world can be delivered right away. For gathering information is now not a sole domain of the journalist and news writers but the business of everybody who got engage in the social networks!
Now the newsroom is not only participating in these social networks but using it to give tweet news and information for the world to see. Now, people on the social media are usually the first people to grasp the latest news around the world.
Social Media was used to cover events like hurricanes, inauguration and community outreach. Example of this is Andy Calvin of NPR who uses ning, facebook and flickr to cover events. James Janega working for the Chicago Tribune also is using twitter for his daily reports.
Social Media did not only influence business marketing but also the news industry.
