DeviantART: An Online Community For Artists
![]()
For thousands of years art has imitated life and due to evolution and new technology, life is imitating art. Art has been around since the prehistoric times and today it still exists and can be presented in many various ways. Artists of old times drew from everyday life in order to produce the pictures they painted and the sculptures they created; nowadays people are imitating works of art and sometimes works of art have served as oracles for what is about to happen in real life. As days, months, and years unfold, have you ever wondered how will art and life coexist especially if they are combined with the present and future technologies?
Art has always had a place in society because every community has its own brand of art whether it sprang from their own culture or it had been influenced by another community. Since the dawn of social networking sites where people from various walks of life and of various interests have gathered and shared vital information about each other, have you ever wondered if there is such a community for artists?
Yes, there is an online community for artists! If you are an artist, an art enthusiast or simply a person who likes to look at amazing artwork, you should join deviantART! DeviantART is an international online community for artists launched in 2000 by Angelo Sotira, Matthew Stephens, and Scott Jarkoff among many others. DeviantART aspires to provide a place for any kind of artist to exhibit and discuss works. Artworks are organized in a comprehensive category structure including traditional art, digital art, photography, literature, filmmaking, flash, skin applications and a whole lot more. It also has downloadable resources such as stock photography and tutorials.
The official deviantART mascot is Fella, a small, robotic, cat character.
DeviantART Features:
• User Pages. Each user will have his or her own personal page where the user’s interests, hobbies, mood, etc. are listed. The user page also exhibits the user’s 4 more recent works and his or her favorites. The deviant may also display his or her featured deviation, journal, and comments box.
• Gallery. The gallery holds the deviant’s artworks. As of November 2007 the gallery has employed the use of folders in order for the user to customize his or her gallery.
• Favorites. A deviant can mark other deviants’ works as his or her favorite and all favorites of a deviant will be compiled in this section. An owner of a deviation can also view the list of deviants who favorited the deviation.
• Collections. A folder of collections is also a feature of deviantART where a deviant can collect same-themed deviations.
• deviantWatch. Deviants can add other deviants on a watch list unless they are blocked by the deviants selected to be watched. Adding a deviant on a watch list will allow the watcher to monitor the activities of the watched deviant such as submission of new deviations, journal entries, and news articles.
• Message Center. The Message Center is where the user can find the latest uploaded deviations of the people he or she watches, messages, and notes. Comments on the user’s deviations can also be found in this center.
• Forums. DeviantART forums are available for deviants to interact with each other.
• Critique. The Critique feature is the newest addition to the site and it allows any subscriber to create or give critiques on a deviation.
• DeviantART Shop. Original deviantART prints are for sale in the shop. Shirts, bags, and subscriptions can also be purchased here.
Art should never be ignored and artists should be given importance for their contribution to society. Visit deviantART now and enjoy the community for artists!
