Social Network Party Storms Spain

It not breaking news that Facebook has the world hooked. Every day, millions of users log-in to make plans, see photos, send news and find friends from years gone by. What is breaking news, however, is that these friends from years gone by are now inviting us to parties, urging us to get in touch and meet up. Not what you were prepared for when you accepted the friend request? Well, don’t be so quick to dismiss it: a recent Facebook party in Madrid has proved that there is a lot to be gained from getting in touch with friends from the past and partying like it’s really 1999.
Giving a reunion opportunity to old friends could be a recipe for disaster or a roaring success depending, of course, on who the old friends are. Your stalker ex is someone you may not want to see across the bar…but if said ex has lost the braces, had a lucky windfall and swapped the white van for a Porsche since your break-up…Well, one drink for old times’ sake wouldn’t hurt, right?
Over 6000 people RSVP-ed to the invite in Madrid, an incredible guest list which prompted several never-miss-an-opportunity businesses to get involved, organise discount vouchers for attendees and make sure their brand was seen.
Though the final attendee number was significantly less – approximately 500 party-goers – given that organisers were charging 10€ per ticket, the event was still more than profitable for Facebook, the social networking giant that continually sets the pace for its competitors to follow.
The fact that organisers were forced to change the original venue to Madrid’s La Riviera club, a booming 1500 square metre venue, indicates just how happy they must be with the party’s outcome. What they describe as starting out as “a dinner for friends” reaching 200 attendees in the first week and 2500 the week after goes to show how the online world works with so much more momentum than off-line life – something businesses of today should bear in mind should they want to keep up with today’s technophile youth.
Thanks to the success of the Madrid bash, there’s no need for us to be reluctant in reconnecting with past acquaintances. So if an invite comes your way, why not RSVP?
