SEM or Search Engine Marketing is a channel of internet marketing that is seeking a promotion to their websites by increasing their ranking and visibility in Search Engine Results Pages (SERP). According to the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM) methods include: SEO or Search Engine Optimization, paid inclusion, contextual advertising and paid placement.
In the year 2006, North American advertisers spent US$9.4 billion on Search Engine Marketing (SEM), a 62% increase over the prior year and a 750% increase over the year 2002. The largest Search Engine Marketing vendors are Yahoo! Search Marketing, Google AdWords and Microsoft adCenter. As of 2006, Search Engine Marketing or SEM was much growing faster than traditional advertising and even other forms of online marketing.
