Geocities Closing this Month

In the 90’s where Twitter, Facebook, Myspace haven’t exist; Geocities has been one of the leading home page service. In 1999 when geocities had more than 1.1 million users Yahoo bought the company for $2.9 billion in dot-com-priced stock. However, it is sad to know that the earliest ages of the social web has been declared to be closed. Earlier this year Yahoo announced the closing of Geocities and last April 2009 Geocities was no longer accepting new account sign-ups. And just recently they sent their final notice of GeoCities Closing. And starting this October 26, 2009 you GeoCities website will no longer be available on the web as well as access your Geocities account and files.
The company has been trying to coordinate with the trends on the internet but sadly the resources are hardly to spare. And new Chief Executive Carol Bartz has been focusing on the companies core since its been laying off about 675 employees in some areas even before the recession.
Yahoo provides a FAQ in assistance of Geocities users in the closing of GeoCities. They also suggest the Yahoo! profile as a centre in managing identity, activities and interest and their Yahoo Web Hosting service. And for those who wants a free web hosting services they suggest: Tripod, Webs.com, Weebly, WebStarts.com, SynthaSite, Wikispaces.
