Facebook Used to Serve the Law

Facebook is currently one of the top five social networking sites in the world and it has benefited a lot of people for various purposes. The social networking site is popular not only for its features but for its purpose as a tool of communication among its users. Recently, Facebook has been used by a lawyer to help serve the law.

Carmel Carbo and Gordon Poyser, a couple in Australia, have been notified by Canberra based lawyer Mark MacCormack of the pending repossession of their home through Facebook. The lawyer utilized the social networking website to inform the couple that their home will be repossessed since they were failed to be contacted through other means. The couple failed to meet their repayments on the $150,000 loan with mortgage provider MKMcapital that is why their home should be repossessed.

MacCormack was granted permission to serve the law by convincing Supreme Court Judge David Harper that Facebook was a legitimate means of contacting the couple and that he has exhausted all other modes of communication. The lawyer was granted permission to serve the legal papers through the site but Judge Harper ordered that the repossession order must be contained in a private message and not on the couple’s public profiles.

The lawyer did a simple search of Carbo’s email address among the users of the site and matched information from her mortgage application to confirm her identity. Poyser was also registered on Facebook and was listed among Carbo’s friends. The couple has already been informed that they have seven days to respond to the court before representatives of the mortgage company will move in to repossess their home.

This groundbreaking event only proves that social media sites such as Facebook can be really helpful in tracking down people and be able to communicate with them.
