MySpace Moves to Music Download

The social networking leader MySpace is set to consolidate on its already established appeal to worldwide music-lovers– by introducing a feature to download music.

Its 120,000,000 users will be able to listen to hundreds of thousands of songs from top international albums in exchange for viewing a series of adverts on their computer screen.  On transferring the songs to an mp3 player, users will have to buy them through Amazon.com, paying the reasonably economical fee of 79 Dollar cents.

The novelty of having music on MySpace is that the users form a part of the promotion of new albums and songs:  As a feature of their profile, MySpacers will be able to list their top songs and favourite albums – and thus give a great social marketing boost to the artists.

The social networking giant certainly has high hopes, planning to surpass Apple’s iTunes, the current world leader for music download which has 8.5 million songs for sale.  A great model to follow, iTunes’ success is truly phenomenal with over 5000 million songs sold since 2003.  Officially, however, MySpace believe their service will “complement” that of Apple, as stated by Chris DeWolfe, one of the site’s representatives.

With respect to what users can download, they really will be getting the cream of the crop; MySpace has come to agreement with a variety of big industry names: Sony BMG, Universal Music, Warner Music group and EMI to name just a few.

Though the rumour has been circulating for some time, it is certainly deft timing putting the plan into practice now – with Facebook, another social marketing giant, slowly catching up to equal MySpace’s user number (it’s already at 90 million), this could well be the boost the leader needs to keep it ahead of the rest.
